By promoting women’s participation, individuals will benefit from their focus on encouraging others and utilising the environment to improve livelihoods.

In Kenya, there are 1,100 native tree species, of which 10% are threatened with extinction. We are working with the communities and partners to ensure that none of Kenya’s tree species become extinct.

The project is a wonderful practical way of supporting women, of educating women and giving them the opportunity to experience empowerment.

At Christmas time last year we raised money for our good friend Noormichuki, and her tree planting project in the Mara, Kenya. As one of the first woman tree planters of this region, we were incredibly excited to support her in setting up new seedling nurseries and train other women in her community.

This project succeeded in providing a source of livelihoods to vulnerable communities, by creating a shared source of income and access to fast-maturing fruit and nut trees, improving livelihood and food security for 160 households in Embu County, Kenya.

Thanks to many generous donations, we raised £10,390 in early December. This figure rose to £11,435 in February. With this funding, we’ve launched ‘My 20 Trees and Me’ tree planting prject with schools across Nakuru County, Kenya in partnership with the youth-led group, Globe Gone Green.

For day 4 of the Big Give Christmas Challenge, we're returning to our schools programme, My 20 Trees and Me: Growing up Together, to see how the children and their trees are getting on.

We’ve recently expanded our tree planting to Northern Mount Kenya, bringing on board a new partner – Mount Kenya Trust (MKT). MKT will plant over 240,000 trees, restoring native forest.

ITF's 20 Million Trees Campaign has completed its first season of planting, with 68,500 seedlings added to deforested land and farms around Embu County, Kenya. The campaign aims to plant 20 million trees by 2024 across Kenya's five Water Tower forests.

The Kenya launch of the 20 Million Trees for Kenya’s Forests Campaign was marked by spirit of celebration last week, with singing, dancing, poetry recitals – and the symbolic planting of the first 100 trees.

ITF’s 20 Million Trees campaign will play a vital role in helping to reverse deforestation and meet international commitments for sustainable development, Kenya’s ambassador to the UK, Mr Lazarus Amayo said last week.

The initiative will target degraded areas in all five of Kenya’s ‘Water Towers’, upland forests which are the source of all Kenya’s rivers and water supplies.

170,000 trees will be planted in projects led by three community youth organisations. In this article we feature the work of the Kangema Youth Group.

The project’s core activities included tree planting on public land, water catchment areas, dispensaries and community farms. Since the project started May 2011,  50,000 seedlings have been raised and planted on various sites.

We are delighted to announce that the project has made excellent progress in it’s first six months which looks set to continue as the scheme moves forward.
