We had the chance to interview Margret Masika, one of the chairwomen of the Alpha Women Empowerment Initiative (AWEI), a tree planting organisation near Kasese in Uganda.

Project update from our partners Masaka District Landcare Chapter (MADLACC) in the central region of Uganda who have recently completed an agroforestry project that sought to reduce poverty levels and improve food security for local communities.

The Alpha Women's Empowerment Initiative is making strides in promoting environmental sustainability through their Grafted Mango Tree Planting Project. With the help of ITF and Wessanen UK, over 300 women have been mobilised to plant trees and improve nutrition and income in their communities.

Kafuga Forest is a remnant patch of ancient rainforest that offers a rare glimpse of Uganda’s remarkable biodiversity. ITF partners, PROBICOU, have been working to secure this area against the ongoing threat of encroachment. Working with both children and teachers, Amuria Schools Tree Planting Project (ASTREPP) aims to raise awareness about environmental degradation and give students practical skills in tree planting.

The project has established nurseries in which a range of tree species are grown can be used by beneficiaries as a source of income (for example by selling fruits or other sustainable tree-based products).
