The humble hedge is the face of much of Britain. However, its ubiquity has led to the hedge being overlooked and taken for granted. After decades of neglect, the hedge is finding favour once more as enthusiasts come to the defence of this once-loved asset.

“This act of vandalism is all the harder to come to terms with because of its sheer pointlessness. And out of this our collective mourning of this tree has revealed a curious paradox about our relationship to nature in the UK.”

In the past few years, we have supported many projects, from urban planting in central Glasgow to community buyouts on the Isle of Skye and we would love to continue further with this.

For Mental Health Awareness Week our team have been sharing what trees mean to them and how connecting with nature has helped them, especially during the pandemic.

On this day, we’d be planting a native hedge – 60 bare-root saplings of Beech, Hornbeam, Hazel, Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Wayfaring Tree.

Join us on the first day of the Worcester Walk Community Project's landscape restoration journey, as we plant a continuous native hedge to protect the rare semi-wooded pasture in the Forest of Dean.

In 2007 this land was unproductive farmland. Two streams flowed sluggishly through it to form a boggy field. With over 1,000 trees have been planted to transform the land and landscape.

Now autumn is approaching, at ITF we’re looking forward to another tree planting season in the UK. We recently closed our Call for Proposals for this year’s UK Community Tree Planting Programme. We’re thrilled with the applications, including community orchards, biodiverse hedging projects, to community-owned woodlands.
